About North Staffs Rowing Club

Our Story

A legacy of Passion & Dedication

The North Staffordshire Rowing Club (NSRC), affiliated with British Rowing, is nestled at Rudyard Lake near Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Rowing has been a beloved activity at Rudyard since the reservoir's construction, with the 1920s seeing three privately managed boat hire businesses thriving there.

A Journey Through Time

  • 1970's: NSRC was initially based at Trentham Lake. However, due to access issues, the club sought a new home.
  • 1980's: Moved to Rudyard Lake with the help of British Waterways. Started from humble beginnings on a farm at Reacliffe Road, where dedicated members transported boats to the lake by car.
  • 1988: Constructed a wooden boathouse, which later became the car park.

Despite having just around 20 members, the club was active in competitions and hosted regattas, with the last one in the early 1990s. Unfortunately, access and health and safety issues halted future regattas.

A New Era

With the management and facilities at Rudyard Lake improving, NSRC moved from the car park boathouse to a new boathouse under the activity centre, where it operates today.

Thriving Community

In recent years, the club has grown, boasting vibrant junior and adult sections. The junior section collaborates with local schools, while both junior and senior members participate in local competitions, achieving significant success.

Now a charitable institution, NSRC continues to expand and develop its activities, fostering a strong rowing community.
